    GPS STUFF

Selective Availability (SA) was turned off midnight 1 May 2000. These are just some very quick tests I did with the cheap Garmin handhelds before and afterwards. The Garmin 45 is an older single channel unit. The Garmin 48 is the newer 12 channel unit. The Garmin 48D is the same 48 unit using the Garmin Differential Beacon receiver which receives the Coast Guard differential corrections. Between 90 and 120 minutes of data were recorded sampling every 10 seconds. Huge difference, of course, with SA off. Still a small improvement using DGPS. Garmin 48 better than the 45.

    Plots
    1. Plot 1 Garmin 48 before & after SA turned off & 48D = Coast Guard Differential. (Boxes approx. 18 meters)
    2. Plot 2 Garmin 45, 48 & 48D after SA turned off. (Boxes approx. 9 meters)
    3. Plot 3 Garmin 48D on 9 May and Garmin 45 & 48 on 2 May. (Boxes approx. 9 meters)
