    Resistance Wire Wavestaffs

A multi-purpose, high resolution resistance wire wavestaff system with extremely low noise and drift was developed at the Center for Coastal Studies, Scripps Institution of Oceanography during the 1970's. It has been very successful in both single and dual wire configurations for use in both the field and laboratory. In the shallow water field configuration, the wavestaffs have a usable dynamic range of 3 meters, with a resolution and maximum drift on the order of 0.3 cm over a period of up to a week. The laboratory vesion has a typical dynamic range of 30 cm with a resolution and typical drift of 0.03 cm over several hours. The resistance wire sensor forms one leg of a balanced, AC coupled bridge connected to a synchronous detector which is responsible for the extremely low noise.

This has been an extremely versatile wavestaff circuit for the Center for Coastal Studies. Wavestaffs have ranged from small lab versions (30 cm with 5 mil Ni-Chrome wire) to large ocean versions (3 m with 20 mil wire) and huge run-up meters (60 m with 40 mil wire). Same actual board is used by changing the AC bridge resistors.

These schematics are freely provided for use by university research labs. We can provide some limited assistance in construction especially updating some of the obsolete parts. If you really need something now and it has to work without a bunch of tweaking, please consider a commercial source. Here are a few. If you know of others, let us know and we will add them. Also, any feedback would also be appreciated if you have used any of these.
